LOIN
Level of information need: the agreed depth of information in a BIM model.
LOIN stands for level of information need. The concept is described in EN 17412-1 and consists of three parts: LOG for geometry, LOI for alphanumeric properties and DOC for linked documents.
The LOIN is not set globally but per component group and per use case. For space management a simplified geometry with room reference is enough. Refurbishment planning needs layer build-ups. Shop drawings and installation planning need fabrication accuracy.
The practical benefit is cost control. Not every component needs the highest level. Defining the LOIN before the tender makes bids comparable and avoids paying for detail nobody uses.
The common shorthand LOD on its own is not sufficient because it mixes geometry and information.
