LOI

Level of information: which alphanumeric properties a component carries.

LOI stands for level of information and describes which alphanumeric properties a component carries. Material, manufacturer, component number, fire rating, maintenance interval.

Three levels are common. LOI 200 represents building elements in simplified form, clearly named and placed in the model. LOI 300 delivers detailed elements with trade-specific geometry and layer build-up. LOI 400 models components precisely for shop drawings, installation planning and fabrication.

The LOI determines the benefit in operation. A model without properties is a drawing in three dimensions. Only with properties does it become queryable and connectable to CAFM or ERP.

A common mistake is to demand LOI 400 across the board. That drives cost without improving operations.
