IFC stands for Industry Foundation Classes and is the open exchange format for BIM models. It is standardised as ISO 16739 and maintained by buildingSMART.
IFC solves a practical problem. In a project, architecture, structure, services and the operator work with different software. IFC is the shared language in which models come together without everyone buying the same tool.
IFC 2x3 and IFC 4 are in common use. For operators IFC is decisive because it keeps models readable beyond the lifespan of the software. A native model depends on the application, an IFC model does not.
