  • 500,000 m²

of plant surveyed with total-station georeferencing

  • 3 weeks

of surveying and laser scanning on site

Starting point

ArcelorMittal, a global steel group headquartered in Luxembourg, runs a plant in Corpus Christi, Texas, among other sites. More than 9,000 kilometres separate the teams in Austria from the plant in the USA.

Current 3D planning documents for conversions and maintenance were missing. Safety training required people on site.

Objective

  • Give teams in Austria remote access to the plant.
  • Run safety training and online walk-throughs without travel.
  • Create a planning basis for 3D design models and an identical second plant.

Approach

After a planning phase of several months with the client, the largest project in qapture’s history to that point began.

The entire site of more than 500,000 m² was surveyed with total-station georeferencing within three weeks. Laser scanning and photogrammetry ran in parallel, in twelve-hour shifts.

The digital twin sits on a cloud platform and is accessible worldwide. Navigation features in the model help people find their way around the plant.

What came of it

The teams in Austria access the Texas plant directly. Costly travel is no longer needed.

Safety training runs virtually. The point cloud is the basis for current as-built models for architects, planners and design engineers.

Most buildings run on outdated data. Yours does not have to.
