Starting point
A furniture store is never finished. Ranges move, zones are rebuilt, services are retrofitted. Rarely more than two years pass between refits.
Until now every refit started with a survey campaign. Consultants travelled, checked record drawings and redrew. On a sales floor of several thousand square metres that costs weeks.
Objective
- Capture large floor areas without interrupting trading.
- Create a basis reusable for every subsequent refit.
- Make capture fast enough to fit the refit cycle.
Approach
Mobile mapping captures large areas in a single pass, at walking pace, while the store is open. The shelves stay, the tills keep running.
37,000 m² in one day. That is five IKEA stores. Conventional survey of the same area would have taken weeks.
Customers are removed in post processing, faces automatically blurred. What remains in the model is the building.
The as-is data sits in the web viewer and is now a fixed part of the refit process. Planning starts at the model, not with a trip.
What came of it
A single capture became a partnership of more than five years.
New sites enter the same system; refitted zones are updated selectively.
